There is something special about making tortillas from scratch. The process is simple, but the result is soft, warm tortillas that make any meal feel a little more comforting. Whether you are using them for tacos, breakfast wraps, or dipping into something savory, homemade tortillas have a fresh flavor that store-bought ones can never match.

This recipe uses a few pantry staples that come together beautifully. You will need flour, baking powder, salt, warm water, and olive oil. Each ingredient plays an important role. The flour provides structure, the baking powder adds a little lift, and the salt brings out the flavor. Warm water helps form a smooth dough, while the olive oil adds richness and softness that keeps the tortillas tender.

Start by mixing your dry ingredients in a large bowl. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly distributed. Slowly add the warm water and olive oil while stirring. The dough will begin to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl. You are looking for a soft, slightly tacky texture. If it feels too sticky, add a small amount of flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it becomes easy to handle.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about five to seven minutes. This step helps develop the gluten, which gives the tortillas their elasticity and strength. As you knead, the dough will start to feel smoother and softer. Once it feels elastic and easy to stretch, cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes. This resting time makes the dough easier to roll out and prevents the tortillas from shrinking when you cook them.

After resting, divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal portions. Roll each one into a small ball and flatten it slightly with your palm. Working one piece at a time, use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a thin circle. Try to keep them even in thickness, but do not worry if they are not perfectly round. The beauty of homemade tortillas is in their imperfections.

Heat a dry skillet or pan over medium heat. Once the surface is hot, place one tortilla in the pan. You will start to see small bubbles form after about a minute. Flip the tortilla and cook the other side until lightly golden with small brown spots. Each tortilla should be soft, warm, and slightly puffed.

As you finish cooking, stack the tortillas on a plate and cover them with a clean towel. This keeps them warm and helps trap steam, which keeps them soft and flexible.

Homemade tortillas are simple but feel like a small kitchen victory. They are soft, flavorful, and perfect for so many meals. You can serve them warm with butter, use them as a base for tacos, or fill them with eggs and avocado for breakfast. Once you taste how fresh they are, you may never want to buy them pre-packaged again.
